Parenting is not easy, especially if we didn’t have very good teachers in our own parents. At times, it can feel incredibly frustrating to parent children who are sassy, snarky, disrespectful, and out of control. Why can’t our kids just do what they’re supposed to do without a lot of hassle and arguing?
Stop the yelling and anger, and learn how to enjoy your kids more by working with a Parenting Coach. Our family therapists are here to help you feel more empowered, confident, and relaxed about your parenting.
Positive Discipline is predominantly the approach our Parenting Coaches utilize. Your insurance might cover Parent Coaching; ask your insurance if you have Family Therapy benefits.
Positive Discipline
Created by Dr. Jane Nelson, EdD, and based on the works of psychiatrists Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs, Positive Discipline is a parenting support program designed to teach young people to become responsible, respectful, and resourceful members of our community.
In a manner that is respectful and encouraging for both children and adults, Positive Discipline teaches important social and life skills. The approach works to identify the belief behind the behavior rather than just trying to change the behavior. Positive Discipline also focuses on solutions instead of punishment, encouragement instead of praise.
Five Benefits of Positive Discipline
- Help children feel a sense of connection through belonging and significance.
- Discover mutual respect and encouragement by being kind and firm at the same time.
- Find an effective and long-term solution by considering what children are thinking, feeling, learning, and deciding about themselves and their world—and what to do in the future to survive or to thrive.
- Learn important social and life skills, including respect, concern for others, problem-solving, and cooperation as well as the skills to contribute to the home, school, or larger community.
- Invite children to discover how capable they are by encouraging the constructive use of personal power and autonomy.
